A final message

Sadly, after 196 years trading as Wigleys, it is finally time to close and retire. I will miss the customers and staff in what has been a friendly and fun loving environment that has been enjoyed by all of us and all our contacts in the trade.

I took over running the shop in 1988 and Rachel joined me in 1989 and she helped me to create the successful business we became. Most of our staff have been with me for many years and have added their own character to the business which made it a one off.

As well as our loyal local customers, the shop became a destination shopping experience and I would like to thank all our customers for supporting us. I am the third generation after the original Wigley family to run the business and sadly have not found anyone to carry on the shop in the same manner.

Welcome to Wigley’s Shoes & Emporium

A long established family business that knows about shoes, situated in the market town Ashbourne on the edge of the Derbyshire Peak District, 13 miles from Derby.

Established in 1830 by John Wigley and later sold to Arthur Edgar Winstone on June 25th 1908, (we have the cheque!)Cheque passing to his son Roger Winstone after the Second World War, who expanded the shop in the 1950’s. Barbara Leyland is now the third generation of the Winstone family to own and run the business, taking over with the help of her husband Eddie in 1988. Barbara is able to trace her family’s association with the shoe trade back to the 16th Century as Master Shoe and Boot Makers in Gloucestershire.
